Ingredients and Method

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs Ground Beef (85/15 is recommended)
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil (or oil of choice)
  • 1 packet (approx. 1 oz) Taco Seasoning
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 12-16 Corn or Flour Tortillas
  • 1 cup Diced Red Tomatoes
  • 1 cup Shredded Purple Cabbage
  • 1/2 cup Thinly Sliced Red Onion
  • Sour Cream (or Greek yogurt)
  • Salsa or hot sauce
  • Fresh Cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Method

  1. Prepare the Garnishes: Use the various bowls in your cookware set to separate and organize the garnishes. Dice the tomatoes, shred the cabbage, and slice the red onion. Set all the bowls aside.
  2. Brown the Beef: Attach the handle to the large skillet and place it over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and then the ground beef. Use a spoon or spatula to break up the meat. Cook for about 6-8 minutes until the beef is fully browned.
  3. Drain the Grease: Carefully tilt the pan and drain any excess grease.
  4. Season the Meat: Sprinkle the packet of taco seasoning over the meat. Stir well until the beef is fully coated. Pour in the 1/2 cup of water and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the meat simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated and the sauce has thickened.
  6. Warm the Tortillas: While the meat is simmering, warm your tortillas. This can be done quickly in a separate dry pan, in the microwave, or wrapped in foil in the oven.
  7. Serve: Once the meat is ready, detach the handle and place the skillet directly on a trivet in the center of the table for easy, family-style serving. Let everyone build their own tacos by filling a warm tortilla with the seasoned beef and topping it with the fresh garnishes, sour cream, and salsa.
