Today, non-stick coatings are used in a range of cookware products throughout the world. Typically, non-stick coatings are applied to metal cooking utensils and cookware surfaces to prevent food from sticking. Non-stick cookware has become an increasingly popular choice among consumers who are short on time and want an efficient and healthy way to prepare meals and minimize the required clean up.

Wrong Information about PFOAs

In recent years, a number of incorrect assumptions have entered the public domain concerning the safety of non-stick coatings. Recent media stories have questioned the safety of cooking with non-stick cookware containing the industrial chemical perflurorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

However, T-Fal’s non-stick coating is made with a plastic polymer called polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) that is 100 per cent safe for consumers. This is the slippery ingredient that makes the non-stick finish. No PFOA has ever been detected in any of T-Fal’s non-stick cookware.

Health authorities in Europe, the United States and other countries have approved the non-stick PTFE coating used on T-Fal cookware. These health authorities have found that PTFE is an inert substance that does not enter into chemical reactions with food, water or household cleaners. If ingested, PTFE is innocuous in the body.

PTFE is so safe that it is often used by the medical profession for coating heart stimulators and small pipes used as replacement arteries. It has even been injected into patients with serious kidney conditions.

Health Canada has examined various non-stick coatings and concluded that they are safe and pose no threat to consumers. In fact, Health Canada has stated that “There is no risk of exposure to PFOA from using cooking utensils and equipment with non-stick coatings.” Consumers can read the Health Canada findings themselves. While stories concerning the safety of non-stick coatings persist, they remain inaccurate and untrue. The media wrongly group non-stick coatings as a synonym for PFOA. This error contributes to inaccurate and misleading information about non-stick coatings.

Consumers should feel confident and at ease using T-Fal cookware and the PTFE non-stick coating applied to it.
